Can we add to the Oklahoma racism, the fact of an 84 year old Missouri white man shooting a black kid standing at his door. By the way, in NJ, I get young black men at my door invariably selling replacement window or changing my cable service. At 72, i have never felt the need to shoot.

Oh - a guy came from a tree service to inspect my trees (we are spraying for lantern fly) A black guy too. Young. He and I had a pleasant conversation - he also pointed out fungus on my rhododendron. Treated that.

So can we suggest that when SCOTUS overruled the voting rights act pretending that things had changed that in fact they had not? Or not enough?

Oh re Hillary and deplorables... she was spot on.

Not being lynched = " they got more rights than we got." Disgusting.

Just wanna see if I have this right. In MAGA world it's not only okay, but also a point of pride, for children, even at just two years old, to have a gun that they could not possibly know how to use (or even remember possessing) and learn that it potentially can be the solution to any real or perceived problem that they face. But seeing boobs in advertising, a penis on a famous statue, or reading about homosexuals or transsexuals in any book is cause for an existential crisis. Got it.

Actually, I don't get it. What is their endgame on this? And how far are they willing to go to achieve it when faced with legitimate opposition? Asking for a friend. And for everyone else who values sanity and common sense over a Neanderthal position of might makes right.

Sundown towns still exist. In fact they exist just two hours from Chicago. So the idea of racist sheriffs in Oklahoma is unsurprising. I do believe that Stitt’s objection is that these thoughts were said out loud not that they were actually said.

As far as DeSantis and Disney go, has he completely forgotten the size of Disney? Has he forgotten who owns most of Reedy Creek? Or does he just think his audience is a bunch of buffoons that will believe everything he says?

I am not against gun ownership and self-defense. However, if you're the sort of person who sees a random person ringing your doorbell, or a car turning around on your property, and you think "threat to my life," you are absolutely not the person who should own a gun. Lifetime ban (on top of a conviction).

”We can sit here and complain about George Soros all you want,” Sununu said in audio published by The Undercurrent on Monday – the same day the governor appeared on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “He’s an evil, evil horrible human being. But guess what. He’s been making investments in the ’80s to build for today.”

I’d like to hear Sununu tell the class why Soros is “an evil, evil horrible human being.” Maybe the problem isn’t so much Fox as it is rightwing disinformation in general. Chris can fk off if he wants to play the normie Republican.

I hope there is no settlement in the Fox case and that it fully goes to trial. I don't share the fear that others have about a Dominion loss. My glass is half-full that it is an opportunity for a necessary win. Nothing will change in our broken "news" system unless and until their are consequences for their actions -- real ones, not just a big monetary payout that ultimately represents merely a speed bump to the malfeasants.

There must be personal accountability. Heads need to roll (legally, not literally, of course), of those who knowingly and willfully violated norms, rules, and laws. Change needs to happen from the top down, rather than wallpaper over the problem and pretend that there's nothing to see there after the heat and lights are turned down. Better still if it is a long trial, with near-daily revelations, specific evidence to back them up, and the sight of prominent Fox on-air personalities squirming in their seats when asked the hard questions and required to answer honestly. They should endure those sleepless nights, hours of anxiety and fear, and other outcomes that lead the rest of us in our daily lives to understand that bad behavior ultimately leads to bad results. It is a necessary step in order for substantive changes to happen.

I respect Mike Murphy's opinion, but who exactly is going to beat Trump in Iowa or elsewhere. DeSantis' antics will play well with the MAGA types, but are they going to abandon Trump?

I also have bad news for R voters who think DeSantis can beat Biden. Outside of the MAGA cult - who thinks 6 week abortion bans, book banning and pissing matches with the Magic Kingdom are what they want in a President?

As a Gen-Xer growing up in the '80s I can easily remember when going "downtown" in most American cities was seen as risky: maybe everything is fine at that Broadway show/museum visit/fine dinner out or maybe you get assaulted. Now, in the evil mirror '20s, going to a Red State or Red/MAGA Area is basically taking your life in your hands. Ask for directions? Get shot. Try to pick-up your siblings? Get shot. Attend a peaceful protest? Get shot.

I've known (and know) plenty of good people from Texas, Tenessee, and other GOP strongholds. Its not as if its the Wild West (yet), but I feel like I need to develop "rural smarts" in addition to the "street smarts" I had to build when going into Baltimore in the late 80s and early 90s.

Let us not forget what happened in Tulsa in 1921.

Every time a news story like the Oklahoma one comes out, I am reminded of the final scene in Casablanca. Republicans now, and Democrats (back when they were Dixiecrats) have been turning their heads since the jump on this stuff. The racist shit runs deep among law enforcement.

"How bad is it out there? How bad could it get? This bad"

I am convinced, absolutely convinced that normal American citizenry are far too complacent about the nature of American politics. All will blow over. MAGA is old and dying off. Trump can't win. We've been here before. And many more brush-offs, pooh-poohs, and it's too soon to think about all that. This is based on numerous conversations with friends and family, and commentary in newspapers, blogs, and more. MAGA and ilk are in a very dark and evil place. Fascism, even if they have no clue of its meaning and history, is well emplaced in rural Red State. Racism and anti-Semitism are overt and vehement and never mind gays and trans who are likely despised more than coloreds and Jews. Red State governance is a rigged game and pushing envelopes in order to enter an authoritarian wasteland they adore. But, Americans are an optimistic people, with a busy work culture, and focused on recreation and family. And maybe it will all work out.

Nonetheless, the clear and present danger is knocking, knocking at the door. And so far there is yet no solution to be found regarding hate and nihilism and dreams of violence while armed to the teeth in that American tribe that is not ours. I can not imagine what will happen if and when Trump is defeated in 2024.

Regarding the Trial of the Century: Putin is worth $200 billion. Can't he spare a mere $1.4 billion to help out his buddies over at Fox News? After all they've done for him....

The Mouse will have its due. Honestly, it shows just how batsh*t the Florida GOP have become that they think attacking Disney, for doing what any smart corporation would do, is good policy and good politics. Well, congratulations to the Disney lawyers, they're about to be able to buy another vacation house after they're done making the Meatball mincemeat

I'm waiting to see what I suspect will happen in these states which isn't much talked about so far but it is this:

Businesses that are forming, or relocating for a variety of reasons need to be able to attract a workforce thaty sees the business location in a positive light for the future employees.

Look at the abortion issues? Who wants to relocate to a state where women's health issues are simply cast aside. I'm wagering those potential HIGHLY TRAINED people will pass on moving and in a big way. That would include trained folks in AeroSpace as well as the engineering techs that create architecture for software. What the south, and its moralists are effectively doing is pushing the south back to being a sharcropper mentality without the luxury of Black Slavery.

I continue to see the issue of abortion rights discounted here as much as the site doesen't want to dig in on it but it's real and it's deep . It isn't just the effects on the upcoming election cycle, its the long term effect on the business cycle. If Wisconsin became a flyover state in 2016, you ain't seen nothing yet.
