Don’t look now, but here it comes, around the corner … Revenge Impeachment. (Spite Impeachment, if you prefer.) Yet again the GOP be GOPing, increasingly desperate to find both relevance and acceptance as it chooses to pursue the political nuclear option. Rather obviously it is a punishment seeking a problem. Looking past the headlines, we need to see it for what it really is: a long-term GOP “Look, squirrel!” moment on steroids, seeking to deflect attention away from Trump’s (alleged) criminal activities, his bizarre and unprofessional behavior entering a lengthy electoral campaign, and their lack of a coherent plan for America other than to own and even to destroy the libs. This has his fingerprints all over it. He should take ownership of it.
That said, my unsolicited advice to the Democrats is: don’t take the bait. Yes, they must deny the accusations. It comes with the territory. But, lacking specific evidence of wrongdoing on Joe Biden’s part and aware that ultimately only Hunter Biden is legally accountable for Hunter Biden’s activities, they do not have to stay on the defensive when there is nothing to defend. Don’t let the GOP change the subject and seize the messaging high ground. Hit up the donors, crank up the publicity machine, and call the GOP out on its lack of a plan for the future. Ask them what it is and emphasize the empty echo beyond mere platitudes that we get in response. And above all give us a list of accomplishments, things that the Biden Administration has done for the American people to make their lives better since Trump left office for his current full-time private sector job as a fomenter of grievance and discord. Reinforce it. Keep it in the eyes and ears of the people. And as time and opportunity allow make the Republicans defend the indefensible by asking them the simplest but most effective question in the arsenal: do you really want to go back to the daily drama and needless divisiveness that was four miserable years of Trump, ratcheted up into a revenge tour against any and all perceived opponents?
The middle ground voters in swing states who stand to decide the election should be receptive to a positive message after so many years of Trump’s and the GOP’s exhausting, self-serving negativity. Make them own that by emphasizing a better option. If the GOP insists on being the rain, make sure that voters know that you are the parade.
All one needs to know about McCarthy is he went to Mar-A-Lago with his tail between his legs after the events of January 6. He's like Fredo Corleone: a figurehead who is both weak and stupid.
Charlie’s bulleted summary of recent influential Republican actions in just the past week is stunning in its simplicity and truth. What will it take to get something of that nature on the front page of a mainstream newspaper or any other mainstream outlet?
Totally agree that Trump would like a impeachment, it's the ultimate whatabout-ism. He can say, see the Biden crime family is being impeached too. For his supporters it normalizes what's happening to him.
Here's the part I'm missing: when McCarthy was elected speaker, wasn't part of the deal that one representative could call for a new speaker election? Why doesn't one of the so-called principled republican representatives do that if McCarthy insists on an impeachment? If the crazies in the right can hold the speaker hostage to their whims, why can't the middle do the same thing? Worst case is we get a new speaker, or no speaker and deadlock. It doesn't seem much worse than what we have now.
Putin's "endorsement" of Trump really says it all! There can be no doubt in sane person's mind that Donald J. Trump is a traitor and is totally beholden to Putin (and maybe others). The only interests he cares about are his own. Full stop. Logically one can view, at the same time, his red hatted supporters as a fifth column out to destroy the very republic that provides them with the freedom to fully express their seditious and traitorous support for a traitor. Just keep saying it over and over again. Traitor. Traitor. Traitor. Maybe it will break thru.
"One moderate GOP lawmaker said they believe there are as many as 30 Republicans who don’t believe there’s enough evidence yet for impeachment, based on informal conversations with colleagues."
Fact: in order to have "enough evidence yet for impeachment," you first have to have some evidence for impeachment. Let's start at the beginning, shall we, not at the end. If there is a beginning. Show us, don't tell us.
I'm glad to see Fetterman out there trolling these GOP buffoons. I hope Dems make use of him. He's perfect for this job.
I have no doubt that slovenly dressed used car salesman, Glenn Grothman (unfortunately my U.S. Rep), will fall in line on impeachment without evidence. The fish rots from the head and state GOP legislatures are taking their cues (see WI judge impeachment). A pox on all of them.
What is mostly unsaid about these impeachment-adjacent shenanigans is that, not only are they proceeding in an evidence vacuum, but the insinuated misconduct didn't even occur during Biden's presidency. How inappropriate is it to Impeach a president over conduct totally separate from his presidency?
The Putin imprimatur of Trump is not surprising, but his justification for it is ominous. If Putin interfered in 2016, what will he do in 2024 if he thinks Trump becoming President will end his Ukraine problem? And we already know there are violent insurrectionists serving multiyear Federal sentences, and with violent buddies on the outside, who think a Trump presidency is their ticket to a pardon. What might they be willing to do in 2024 to tip the scales?
The only way I can make any sense of all this is that they /want/ the system to crash completely and are fool enough to think that they can control what happens next.
How much is Putin paying MAGA to help undermine, destabilize and weaken the U.S. Government? Or do they just have common goals?
Vladimir Putin: "Everything that’s happening with Trump is politically motivated persecution of one’s political rival, that’s what it is."
Kevin McCarthy on the impeachment inquiry: "These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives."
The only way we get a natl govt interested in governing is to vote D in 2024. That’s it. None of this “reward the good R” stuff. Ds hv to control both houses of Congress after Nov 2024. Especially if, God forbid, Trump wins the Presidency back.
Fellow Bulwark Readers, I have received word this morning of the F.C.'s top secret dirt they have dug up on Joe Biden, via Hunter's laptop. It's a document, titled, "For the Big Guy's Eyes ONLY!" Here is it's contents: "Skinner says the teachers will crack any minute. Purple monkey dishwasher." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lH-yw5vffg
We're back in tom nichols country: there is no hope for the gop as currently constituted and no one who cares about the future of the country should vote gop on any level.
Which is why bill lueders is vastly premature: tens of millions will ignore my comment in '24 and if enough in the right places do, there will be no accountability, simply mass pardons.

The GOP has devolved into a group of middle school students in detention.

Bravely brave Sir Kevin
Went forth from MTG
He was not afraid to lose
His precious gavel
He was not in the least bit scared
To be ousted by Matt Goetz
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Kevin
