Every time i read an article like this, or watch the current crop of GOPer's perform for the media i am transported back some 47 years ago. It was a time in my life when i was faced with the most challenging decision i ever i had to make. I have never regretted it, not for one moment.
I was a raging alcoholic and my life was in a downward spiral. There was no good ending if i stayed the course. I finally had to admit to myself what i was; unless and until i did that, nothing would change. As i reflect back, it was the only way out for me that didn't end in death.
Tragic? Overly dramatic? Not at all. It's called life and making sound choices based on where and who you/we are. Sadly, the Grand Old Party is caught in the throes of a deadly disease called trump and they are intellectually incapable of the rigorous honesty needed to rid themselves of their death spiral.
Much like i had to remove alcohol from my life, they need to flush trump from theirs. With every story written, they simply prove time and again they can't do it.
I saw this reluctance of "Never Trump" GOP presidential contenders to criticize Trump first hand when I spent 20 minutes asking SC Gov Mark Sanford every which way as to whether asking a foreign govt to investigate a domestic opponent was an impeachable offense by a President. It was obvious that he did, but he knew that any chance, ANY chance he had to be viable in a GOP primary prevented him from telling the truth about his opinions about Trump.
A Never Trump GOP Presidential nominee in 2024 exists in the same world was unicorns.
So, as in the Old Testament, we are attempting to count the righteous Republicans. We'll use the biblical standard of 10 righteous making an institution worth saving. We have new statements from Hogan and Sununu. And Cheney and Kinzinger are gone. Looks like we're down to zero.
Thank you, Sarah. I listened to a podcast with Mr. Sununu and thought, "Well, I wouldn't agree with everything he does, but he's at least realistic and reasonable." And then he stated that he'd support Trump if he were the nominee; yup, he'd support someone who tried to blackmail a foreign leader and fomented a coup against our government. Sorry, Mr. Sununu, that's neither realistic nor reasonable; that's disgusting.
To those who continue to believe that a “normal” republican will save the day…ha, ha ha! Both Hogan (despite his word salad contortions) Sununu are going to back TFG if he is the nominee. Sarah is 100% correct- their backing shows that they too are unfit to serve.
This is why nobody who stayed loyally Republican during the Trump era gets my vote barring highly exceptional circumstances.
Long, long before J6, long before he was even inaugurated, Trump was visibly and manifestly unfit for electoral office. We've long since become desensitized to the things he said and did on the campaign trail, but it was right there in front of everyone.
Then, upon taking office, he was exactly what he'd shown himself to be- a man of no morals, no conscience, simply craven appetites and needs.
But, y'know, tax cuts and Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and Coney-Barrett. Never mind that he destroyed such international standing as we had remaining, leading to however many deaths. Never mind that he bungled covid, leading to however many deaths. Never mind that he actively abused his power to interfere with investigations into his criminality.
The list goes on, and the only Republican defector of the era who made it stick was Amash.
Then J6 happens and a scant handful of Republicans who were actually present likewise jump ship and make it stick. And they're welcome, but they are certainly not morally reliable, given everything that came before. Because anybody with a fucking brain could see J6 in Trump's words and actions before he was even elected the first time.
And if, through all that, you could still declare yourself a loyal Republican? Yeah hard pass. The party let itself be turned into a vehicle of stroking the ego of a perpetual loser whose actions contributed to millions of deaths globally. (Accounting for his covid fuckups and how he inspired Bolsonaro to follow suit.)
The clown show in the House is the modern GOP, and it deserves to be put in a sack and tossed in the lake. Something will likely emerge from the shambles of this era and eventually turn back into a viable party, but none of these bastards will ever be anything but cowards, traitors, and opportunists.
The Sununu and Hogan statements are the agonal gasps of a party actively being suffocated by Trump/MAGA.
The Republican party time and time again has subjugated policy and decency and the most fundamental interests of the United States (financial solvency, security) to Trump and MAGAs whims. Sununu and Hogan are admitting that they will do the same, for the right price.
There's nothing worth saving in the Republican party. Burn. It. Down.
Sad day, Larry. Your dad was one of the backbenchers who broke Nixon's back when needed and now here you are dithering over Trump still. Just plain sad
What I *meant* to say is, I don't think Trump will get the nomination, but if the Democrats run Satan--or maybe Joe Biden--I'd give Trump another look.
'Trump himself was refusing to commit to supporting the GOP nominee if it wasn’t him because, well, he’s Trump.
'“It would depend,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in a radio interview Thursday, later adding, “It would have to depend on who the nominee was.”'
This begs the question, Who would he support as nominee if it weren't him? I can think of only one person, and that's John Barron.
Hogan is just another spineless Republican who puts party over democracy. Pathetic. Despicable. UnAmerican. Deplorable. There aren't enough adjectives to describe these traitors to America. Sarah Longwell nailed it.
Blowout jobs numbers will get mostly crickets, unlike the mediocre jobs numbers that Trump constantly hailed as proof of the best economy ever and the media mostly accepted as true. Dems need to become better marketers, and the media is REALLY into Biden/economy doom porn. We'll probably get another round of "blowout jobs numbers add to Biden's Fed headache" or some such from WaPo and CNN.
I'm starting to think that R's just shitposted and wishcast everyone into the expectation of a recession. They beat the "Biden economy failing" drum so hard and so much that it became sort of an independent reality. Yes, I know inflation was and is real, but I've yet to see any compelling argument that Biden is primality to blame, and the economy overall seems much more resilient than most were expecting.
When I watch the cowardice of the gop, I realize that I no longer need to wonder just what the hell happened in Germany in the 30s.
"I will vote for whoever the nominee is" = "I am unwilling to sacrifice my standing within the party".
None of these chumps have the courage and conviction of Liz Cheney or Adam Kinzinger. Assume the worst of them, and move on.

Off-topic: On the Chinese Spy Balloon remember that “ Publicly reported “ and “noticed “ are 2 very different things.
Also, anyone seen that Biden recession?
'Trump himself was refusing to commit to supporting the GOP nominee if it wasn’t him because, well, he’s Trump.
'“It would depend,” Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in a radio interview Thursday, later adding, “It would have to depend on who the nominee was.”'

For an example of someone who is a hero to the Republicans for shooting people, I give you Kyle Rittenhouse.
