I have never enjoyed a SOTU so much in my life. I hope we can stop the “Biden’s too old” chorus now. He was spry and used decades of political experience to own the MAGAs. He even tried to help out poor SINO McCarthy as his weakness was on full display. Great tempo throughout as POTUS kept my attention the entire time.
I have questions after that SOTU. So many questions:
1) Did anyone check MTG's office for a hoard of spotted puppies?
2) Did republicans really think nobody heard them publicly toying with the idea of sunsetting Social Security and Medicare?
3) Is it really possible the 'America First' crowd doesn't want a Made-In-America economy, jobs repatriated from overseas, and products made here in the good ole US ofA? Is that why they didn't clap?
4) Did Liar Huckabee Nepotism really intend to deliver American Carnage 2.0? Was she really broadcasting from a funeral home waiting room?
IMO, there were two big takeaways from last night's speech: The Democrats are the party of Morning in America, the republicans are rooting against us. And, if ever we needed a reason to shut down the SOTU political theater, we got it last night.
I would be VERY glad if the President delivers the next one from the Oval Office, then sends a copy to the house and senate. That would fulfill his Constitutional obligation without having to deal with a bunch of people who act like drunks in a comedy club. And we can finally do away with the tedious, unnecessary, and not-constitutionally required response speech.
"The California Republican, who began the night vowing to play the adult in the room, instead found himself sitting stoically at the dais as his GOP hardliners heckled the president."
When Biden started with the line, "Speaker, I don't want to ruin your reputation, but I look forward to working with you", I flashed back to the line from Jerry McGuire - "You had me at hello"....
I get that Biden is old in presidential terms, but this was one of his finest nights. I saw a lot of Pelosi sparks in him and it did my heart good!
"I’ve never seen anything like it in a State of the Union speech – they ran at him like a pack of lemmings and, with a wink and a grin, he politely directed them to the cliff." Yes!!! Awesome to see experience in action.
If Mitt is going to make a list of R's who would behave differently it they "had any shame," he only needs a list of the entire Republican congressional delegation.
Seems like every time someone writes Biden's political obituary he pulls one out of the hat. In this case it was a damn good State of the Union speech. Anyone doubting Biden is too old for the job should watch this speech, watch him giving it back to Republicans, then doing the rounds with the House Chamber for an hour after.
On the Republican Primary front, it seems like we will be stuck debating what's creepier: being Jeffrey Epstein's friend a solid decade, or throwing an illegal rager with the high school seniors you're teaching. The answer is don't vote for either of them.
Biden's been around the block a bunch of times and has dealt with all sorts of people. MTG's performance last night reminded me of what Michael Corleone told his nephew Vincent about Joey Zasa in "The Godfather Part III": "Joey Zasa is nothing...We'll be able to see him coming, a mile away."
Biden saw MTG coming from a mile away, was waiting for her, and when she did what we all knew she would do, he allowed her to humiliate herself.
Imagine being almost 50 years old and having the privilege of attending a State of the Union and behaving the way she did.
I didn't watch, but read that only a single Republican applauded at the line that "a billionaire should not pay less taxes than a teacher or a firefighter" - that should make it into LOADs of Democratic ads. And yes, Biden's trap for the Rs regarding SS and Medicare was a joy to behold!
Can someone tell me what are the policies or ideas that count as Republican? The other day, I saw Asa Hutchinson on Morning Joe giving a few meaningless minutes (so nothing at all constructive). All he was was a nice man saying Democrats bad, Biden bad, GOP good.
For example, re the debt. We know that we spent a lot during COVID - and this saved our economy. We also know that over the last 20 years we have cut non defense, non entitlement spending. We also have 40 years of tax cuts. So clearly we cannot keep cutting non entitlement spending. The IRS, National Park Service et al can barely function. So we need to increase taxes - and that really means on those who benefitted the most.
Can a Republican at least be honest about that?
Then we have matters like environmental regulations. It appears we may be able to modify some of the more restrictive regs that impact farmers (for example). But the GOP seems to only want to gut them entirely. So pig manure lagoons for all?
Re other regs - from airlines to banks we see endless fees that apply most to those with the least income and least power. How is it conservative to not care about credit card late fees etc?
Even re social issues - I think gender theory is mostly bullshit. But for the individuals and families concerned how is it conservative to be so mean spirited?
My guess is that when Nixon pushed the GOP to accept into its fold the racists from the old Dixiecrats, that is gradually took on the hatefulness too. Please prove me wrong.
I didn’t want to watch, got sucked in, then thoroughly enjoyed it. On a separate note, Charlie is proving his “self-gelding” comment has unlimited mileage. It’s the rental car of jokes.
I’m so sorry to see that Ron DeSantis has been revealed to be a pedophile. 😢
It’s weird that the guy outing him is the one who routinely walked in on teen beauty pageant contestants in various stages of undress. Too bad for Ron that he’s not a celebrity. Then, they let you do it.
One of the first investigations the GOP House majority should undertake is how the GOP was hijacked by uncouth, uncivil, largely ignorant people who have little to no fundamental understanding of what conservatism actually is, what its traditional values and beliefs are, what their role as representatives of the people is supposed to be, and how to behave in public after leaving the teenage years behind.
What an embarrassment they are to anyone with a modicum of decency and humanity. It is impossible to escape the conclusion that if they had not found politics as a soft landing point, they would be struggling to get and hold a job elsewhere and have few or any friends other than those who emulate their boorish behavior, feeding off of each other for emotional and psychological nourishment. Drunk on power and how they think they look in the mirror, in fact they redefine the bottom of the barrel with each passing day. Heaping shame on all those voters who refuse to find a better alternative than these lowest common denominator fools and tools.
My biggest takeaways from last night: 1) POTUS and his speechwriters clearly knew how to bait the GQP and they took it hook, line, and sinker. Impressive piece of political trolling there. 2) "My Kevin" showed to the world how utterly gutless and powerless he is over his caucus. 3) "Let's get the job done!" is the 2024 campaign slogan
MTG reminded me of two characters. First, Cruella De Vil but really better, the part played last year in White Lotus by the woman scattering ashes near Hawaii.
Nice Coat. Keep it classy.
Biden played the house like a fine violin. Huckabee was on a washtub base.

I hope this one is remembered as the STFU SOTU.

But guys, Biden can't talk or message effectively!
