On DeSantis not “throwing the brick”… the mind-numbing thing of it all, is if Trump IS indicted, we CAN expect DeSantis (and everyone else running in the GOP primary) to throw bricks at the Justice Department/Georgia case for bringing the indictments. The cowardice is unbelievable.
Regarding the "doubling down" and yesterday's "conservatism" rant: There will always be a significant political upside for any party willing to place its bets with the maintenance of societal hierarchies. The members of the public most concerned about losing what they see as their "rightful place" in society will be unflinchingly loyal to the entities that reflect their fears. The Democrats took advantage of such fears throughout the Jim Crow era. Whether consciously or not, Republicans adopted that strategy following Nixon. The "big tent" approach requires a party to accept that some of its supporters in one election might go elsewhere in the next. The increasingly parochial Republican Party of narrowing diversity can't do that. The bet on culture wars will continue. It's not economic or policy conservatism that drives today's Republicans, but rather the maintenance and reinforcement of societal hierarchies. See the acceptance by the "working class" of tax cuts for the wealthy. And the admiration for Putin, Orban, et. al.
I am not a fan of DeSantis, but I think his response is pretty effective. There is an old saying that if you get in an argument with an idiot, after awhile you can't tell who's the idiot.
Many of the Trump supporters I know have a very personal connection to TFG. If you directly insult Trump, they feel you are directly attacking them. By pointing to the scoreboard, DeSantis is reminding them that Trump is a 3 time loser, while giving his supporters space to drop their support for Trump.
As an aside: from Sarah Longwell's excellent recent podcast--she asked Always Trumpers why they support Trump. Here's an answer from one happy attendee: "He's never lied. Not once has he lied to us. Everything he says turns out to be true." Ignorance is truly bliss.
That mirror the Republicans use to reflect back just how damn good looking they are might not be as faulty as we hope as long as the Supreme Court remains on their side. I think we underestimate that part of the equation at our peril.
"While Trump can still legally run for president while under indictment — or even if convicted of a crime — as a practical matter it would likely be devastating to his election prospects."
Which raises the question - if those convicted of felonies are not allowed to vote in many states, why in the world would we allow someone convicted of a felony, or in trump's case, hopefully, many felonies - why would we allow those persons to run for office, especially at the federal level, and more especially at the presidential level?
“Last week, in the new House majority, I joined my colleagues in putting an end to House Democrats’ radical, abortion-on-demand until the moment of birth agenda”
“I have been proud to put an end to the radical, taxpayer funded, abortion-on-demand until the moment of birth Far Left Democrat agenda”
Those snippets are from Elise Stefanik’s Weekly Update that we northern NYers are lucky enough to receive. I don’t see how normal people could fail to be moved by the outright lies and spittle flecked hatred in that. I guess that’s the strategy post-Dobbs anyway. Lie and smear.
This is one of those days where I will need to put on a Disney movie because of the news about the ongoing Republican mocking of my ancestors and history to hide from their own (in many instances: racist) darkness. They also are just narcissists and think the problem is people who can't see their virtue. A healthy society would ruin these people. But, that's up to God and Karma. I will resume my Disney marathon watch (currently at 1965).
Ron DeSantis is loathesome. #shorttrump and all of that. However, I’m not sure what he’s doing is such a bad idea strategically. Do you really want to get in a food fight with Orange Caligula beginning in January of 2023? With just under 2 years to go?
Polls say Republicans do not respond well to attacks on Desantis. He will ultimately have to punch back. But at least temporarily isn’t there some benefit to ignoring the screaming toddler in the corner? It isn’t a long term strategy but it allows for the fact that people might just get sick of it. Desantis is said to be a pretty unattractive person up close. Why demonstrate that this early?
They are both vile humans with no loyalty to our laws, our history (which DeSantis is trying to erase and of which trump is thoroughly ignorant), or what truly makes America great. Strategically though, I think DeSantis might be onto something. At least in the short term.
If Haley doesn't think Fuentes and Gosar will flood the net with pictures of her family in turbans and "connections to 9/11" along with her birth name and if she doesn't think that will work, then she's dumber than Louie Gohmert
De Santos’. Courage is limited to shipping defenseless immigrants on a bus to Martha’s Vineyard, and attacking school’s academic choices. He’s a gutless coward or in other words a perfect republican.
Too many voters in America think they are Republicans or Democrats BEFORE they are Americans. The result is people like Trump or more recently, Santos. Never mind the candidate vote Republican and that is what has produced such destructive mediocrity.
From where I sit, I think Trump will be the nominee. In the GOP primaries, tons are winner take all in a plurality structure. In 2016, Trump came out on top of a large field and won based on that fact alone. His base loves him and they are all his beloved "Low information Voters". So, he can pile up delegates without a majority vote. If we currently see Desantis, Haley, Pompeo, Pence et al running against him, he'll cruise to a victory the same way he did in 2016. Then his troubles begin seriously. One has to wonder how many of his legal chickens will have come home to roost.
If the party sticks to ramming Dobbs on abortion down the electorate's throat, I see big GOP losses in 2024.

Nikki Haley has about as good of odds of becoming President as I do. So, enderak08 2024?

The only bigger "empty suit" of a politician in GOP circles these days than Nikki Haley is Glenn Youngkin. My god are they sanctimonious windsocks.
"Locked and loaded?" This from a guy who's never been in a fight in his life that didn't involve lawyers.
