No Ben Sasse..."The zealots thrive..." because people like you let them thrive. Your noble words (which I fell for in 2017) were never supported by your jelly-fish spine. That you are still waxing poetic about what makes a great democracy, but still can not admit you're own complacency (stayed quite on Trump until after you were reelected, voted to acquit Trump for recruiting/blackmailing foreign govt to attack domestic opponents) proves how unfit you were to be a US Senator. Never mind one that pretends to a healing force in America. You are a fraud.
Kevin McCarthy's obvious thirst for the speakership combined with the razor-thin MAGA margin in the house has left him vulnerable to the burn-it-all-down caucus. Nobody would enjoy watching Kev have to move his stuff out of the speaker's office more than his own party.
Contrast that to Nancy Pelosi following the 2018 blue wave. She didn't cave to the Squad and its demands, she brought them into her tent. I know she's not everybody's cup of tea around here, but Pelosi was a damned fine speaker who knew now to count votes and persuade the fence-sitters. That's a skill nobody in the MAGA party has. Not a leader in the lot of them.
It's amazing the lessons we take away from things when we use motivated reasoning. Green thinks Boebert's victory was so narrow because she didn't Trump hard enough, rather than she Trumped so hard she almost lost her seat. Green seems to think the composition of her district is representative of every single district, but not everyone in America is as stupid, angry, or impervious to shame as her constituents.
As far as the Sasse piece, I'm still not ready for this both-sides chum when he high-tailed it out of Congress because his own party has become a dysfunctional cult. He says the Left wants an all-powerful bureaucracy while the Right wants a strongman. This doesn't cut it. The Right wants POWER, and will use extralegal means to obtain it. They'd be just fine with the bureaucracy, too, if it were their bureaucracy. This is not happening among his colleagues on the other side of the chamber.
Sure McCarthy is a hollow and a weak leader but what else could ANYONE expect? What are you thinking can be produced by a party that when it had a chance to stand up (multiple chances) to the awful human being they crowned their King in 2016, failed to do Every. Fucking. Time. (sorry for the language)
I am not looking forward to the next couple of years. And I am tired of the knee jerk reaction of finding humor in the gyrations of this group of reactionary asshats.
The Kevin McCarthy saga is just sad. I remember when Republicans were all about morality and doing what's right. Heck, Bill Bennett went far with his "Book of Virtues." (Yes, I know the irony of how virtue worked out for Mr. Bennett.) If McCarthy (and the Republicans) want to go somewhere, remember values. Try actual governance! Try actually balancing the Federal budget (not just tax cuts for the mega wealthy and increased spending)! Try actually reforming immigration, heathcare, education funding, infrastructure, etc. Our country faces so many challenges, yet, the House has Hunter Biden's laptop as its main priority. Seriously?
I am a we, a they, a well adjusted comfortable non-binary a living in Skokie on Chicago's north side. I wear exclusively womens clothing in public and am very well accepted. I mention this because in your litany of wrongs of the right you noticably left out their war on people like us. But know this, we vote with our values and our purses.
I had braced myself for the giant national embarrassment that the Republican controlled House of Representatives would be for two years. I feared it would be Hunter Biden and subpoenas from those who refused to honor subpoenas from the last Congress. Two years of unjustified anger and grievance. Kevin McCarthy, who has constantly proved that he has no values to defend and no philosophy to follow wanted to be Speaker so he can be on TV more often. Beyond that I do not know why. He bet on the Trump train and that got derailed.
But now, they have exceeded my lowest expectations. They can’t even get started. They can’t agree on whose lies are less relevant. Now that they can’t just say “NO” to everything they have nothing to say and can’t agree on it.
"The small but important role of government, for the civic pluralist, is a framework for ordered liberty. Government doesn’t give us rights, or meaning, or purpose or permission. It exists to protect us from the whims of mobs and majorities." - Ben Sasse
Yeah, sure Ben. You just went to work for the most autocratic governor in the nation.
You're still a disappointment.
Oh, and welcome back Charlie from your two year break! 😋
Maybe Hope Hicks and Ben Sasse could come up with some better New Year's Resolutions to follow this year other than "enables authoritarians" and "plays defense for authoritarians."
If they want to find the real political problem over the last 7 years they can look inward at their moral compasses, not outward at their critics and political rivals. They own this. All of it. They enabled it every step of the way and gave it political top cover all the way up until the writing was on the wall and the damage had been done, and even then they mostly kept their mouths shut rather than go on the offense against it.
These people are so so so morally weak that I literally wince reading their words. Do they not understand how they sound yet?

Hope, sweetheart, you all look like domestic terrorists because you ARE domestic terrorists.

Welcome back Charlie and a happy new year to you and everyone in the Bulwark family
Hicks cracks me up. She enjoyed her dirty money, earned knowing full well that she worked for a sociopath. She even came back for a second helping.
I'm playing "Hearts and Flowers" on the world's tiniest violin for these repugnant fools. I shed no single tear for them.

Gosh, if only there were something Ben Sasse could have done about that with the four years left in his Senate term.
Is Lindell back on crack?

Newt complained about Repulicans behaving badly. MTG accused another Repulican of lying to the base.
It was said that irony died the day the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Henry Kissinger. If that is true then its corpse has just been desecrated.

Ben Sasse? Who? the guy who quit the senate to become the president of the University of Florida who no one wants? That guy.?
Power abhors vacuous thinking. Sasse was ineffective as well as powerless right up to the end.
